Inside Out - The course

Inside Out five level course from Elementary to Advanced
A five-level course for adults and young adults, Inside Out is built around structured work on grammar and lexis, planned speaking tasks, and motivating reading and listening texts.

Inside Out combines insights from classroom research with an awareness of how teachers teach to provide a lively, flexible and comprehensive English course designed to develop real-life communicative skills and powers of self-expression.

Why use Inside Out?

Because it's:

  • Comprehensive - Behind the fun, Inside Out provides a fully-integrated grammar syllabus. The author team, all of whom still teach, firmly believes in the importance of a solid grammatical framework to any course.
  • Focuses on the four skills and grammar, giving vocabulary work in every unit.
  • Varied and flexible
  • Easy to use - Lessons are simple to follow, making planning time shorter and teaching easier.

Key features of Inside Out

  • Meaningful tasks to help students develop real-life communicative skills and powers of expression.
  • Structured planning time built into tasks to help improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Engaging and personalised activities to encourage students to articulate what they know.
  • Focus exercises which highlight and recycle lexis to help students build a bigger and better active vocabulary.
  • Imaginative activities based on interesting and entertaining texts including pop songs, book extracts and magazine articles.

Speaking
Students’ passive knowledge of English will become active through the carefully-staged, meaningful speaking tasks throughout the course. Time has been specifically built into the speaking exercises so that students can carefully prepare what they want to say and how to say it.

Students are continuously encouraged to draw on their own experience to develop their speaking skills; this ‘personalisation’ is an integral part of the course in which students are given the choice to go into as much or as little detail as they want about their own experiences.

Grammar and lexis
The authors see the development of speaking skills as of key importance, but they also recognise the importance of providing a solid grammatical framework for students to make progress.

Students are encouraged to 'notice' new grammar and new vocabulary in contexts where the meaning is clear. They are then given opportunities to manipulate the new language - try it out in different situations through a wide variety of engaging practice and personalised activities.

At higher levels, there is a logical movement to more emphasis on lexical grammar – collocation and connotation – to ensure constant extension of vocabulary, and coverage of more complex structures.

Generative Texts
The course provides imaginative exploitation activities based on intrinsically interesting and humorous texts, including articles, book extracts, web sites, letters, interviews and original pop songs. Many of the texts are authentic and each unit contains at least one longer text which varies in length according to level.
